Teach all the children of the World.

What is a helicopter parent?
As a person who works in a college setting, I am often warned about the helicopter parent. These are parents who are hoovering around the officially adult children trying to get information that will allow them to help influence and assist their "child". On a college campus this is considered a very bad thing. We want young people to take those steps towards adulthood and take responsibility for their own lives. We glory in seeing a young person arranging their own schedule and developing time management skills. We like when they know how to confront a problem head-on.

On the other hand, I have young children. I am never more disturbed than when someone who is placed in charge of my child temporarily decides to withhold information from me about what my child is doing when they are with the caretaker - whether that is a pre-school or a baby sitter.

I do not appreciate an elemenatary school having a policy that does not allow me to see what my child is doing during the day.

How can I raise my "child" if I do not know what they are experiencing. Should a five-year-old be turned over to the system? Do they need to be independent at that age?

From college to kindergart - these are extremes, but it is important to understand that supervising your actual children is necessary.

When they are adults, you need to let go and see if they can fly, but don't do it too early.
